2-2 (AET), 2-4 on penalties
The first game of November was the 2nd round
of the Montgomery Cup that saw Cuckfield Town visit The Rec. After
120 minutes of football it was Cuckfield who were victorious 4-2 on
penalties.
We were off to a worse start than usual in
this game as we found ourselves 1-0 down after just two minutes. The
Cuckfield striker was allowed to run through on goal to slot home
despite being clearly a yard offside. Thankfully this early wake up
call galvanised us into life and we began to dominate proceedings
and it was not long before we were back on level terms. Richard
Ambrose cut in from the left and from the half way line drilled the
ball towards the penalty area…the ball just kept going and with the
help of some generous goal keeping the ball ended up in the back of
the net. We maintained our dominance and played some great football,
in very bad conditions, throughout the remainder of the game; but
despite all of our pressure and attempts we were unable to break the
deadlock. We did not have to wait to long in extra time for a break
through, the ball falling to Phil Pedley at the back post, who
volleyed home to give us a deserved lead. Unfortunately we were
unable to see out the remainder of the game and Cuckfield grabbed a
last gasp equaliser with a header from a needlessly conceded free
kick. And so to penalties, Cuckfield were more clinical from twelve
yards and after penalties from Felstein and Ambrose were saved out
of the cup – despite Clift’s best efforts.
On the positive side of things we dominated
our opponents, play some good attacking football and created a lot
of good opportunities…something to build on.
