It was third successive home game when Lindfield visited The Rec,
and it saw Buxted pick up their first point of the season with a 2-2
draw.
Verrall was available again but Ambrose, Bonella and Pedley were
unavailable which meant a first start for Brian Gow after impressing
as a substitute against Willingdon and there was also a call up for
Ricky Parrish - we started with the 4-4-2 formation we ended the
game with the previous week. The first half was a close affair with
both teams having chances to open the scoring, but the major
incident came midway through the first half when Clive White got
injured. White came of his line quickly to save bravely at the feet
of the striker, who was under challenge from Felstein, and all three
players collided on the floor with the goalkeeper coming of worse.
White played on after a long delay and managed to see out the
remainder of the half with his movement severely restricted. The
game was finely balanced at the start of the second half and it was
Lindfield who broke the deadlock when a midfielder ran from deep and
put a weak shot past White, low and down to his left. It was at this
point it was obvious that White could not continue, saying as he
left the field that normally it would have been an easy save for
him. With no proper keeper on the bench Karl Harrison, who was on
the bench due to a slight injury, volunteered to don the gloves. We
also reshuffled on pitch and Martin Penfold moved from left wing to
center forward. The results were almost instant as within five
minutes Penfold chased down what looked like a lost cause, stole the
ball from the defender and finished with calm authority to level the
game. Buxted were marginally on top at this point and took the lead
ten minutes later when Tim Burchett played a free kick to Martin
Verrall who whipped in a great cross to the back post where it was
met with power and accuracy by Penfold who headed back into the
opposite corner – 2-1 Buxted. Harrison continued to make some good
saves as make shift goalkeeper, but Lindfield were able to scramble
an equaliser five minutes from time after a collision of striker,
Harrison & Dale Mayhew.
With the personnel that were missing and having suffered an injury
to Clive White this was a good point, although we left the pitch
feeling disappointed having been so close to victory.
