The Final game
of September saw us travel to Falmer to face Old Varndeanians where
we were given a lesson in football - they ran out 5-0 victors.
In addition to
still being without Ambrose and Harrison we were also missing
Felstein and White (injured the previous week after suffering
internal bleeding and bruised ribs), but we were able to welcome
back Pedley and Bonella. Thankfully we had signed a new goalkeeper a
week earlier and with White injured Matt Clift came straight in for
his debut. As seems usual, so far this season, we were again slow
starters in this match and we were well and truly punished.
Varndeanians were two yards quicker with their passing and movement
and within 10 minutes they were 2-0 in front. We then managed to
stem the flow; we even created a few half chances for ourselves and
reached halftime only 2-0 down. The second half saw us play a little
more football as we went in search of a way back into the game.
After twenty minutes we had come close to halving the deficit after
creating a couple of good chances. However as we continued to push
for goal we left ourselves vulnerable at the back, especially as,
having used the only sub, Tim Burchett was struggling with a
hamstring injury. Old Varndeanians soon took advantage of the spaces
and added three more goals without reply before the final whistle.
The only
positive to come from this game was the performance of debutant
Clift who stopped the score line getting into double figures!
