Last season Buxted II narrowly avoided
relegation, whilst Lingfield our opponents on a sunny afternoon at
the Rec, were unfortunate to miss out on promotion on goal
difference. However, the visitors must have left the ground a
rather chastened side, escaping what might have been a drubbing
following a host of scoring opportunities squandered by Buxted.
The second half in particular was very much one
way traffic, with Clive White mostly untested over the 90 minutes.
Some credit must be given to dogged defending on the part of the
Lingfield Xi, with special mention to Keeper Andrews who pulled off
a leaping save from an excellent long range strike on goal by Ricky
Parish.
Buxted really deserved a better result, playing
some good passing football and creating so many chances. the
whole squad contributed effectively, Noodles, Brian Gow and James
Bonella all returning from injury were outstanding, and Mark Lewis
on his league debut slotted into midfield well. One effort
bundled in by Ricky Parish was disallowed, and what seemed from the
touchline to be a penalty was turned down, following consultation
with the linesman.
Some disappointment over the result perhaps,
but a very encouraging start to the season. Man of the match
was James Bonella. Also many thanks to the excellent support
received from the 1st team players who stayed to watch.
One Lngfield player was taken to Hospital with
a badly damaged arm and the Buxted squad wish him well.
