Buxted trooped off to Lingfield knowing that
only a win would do. Ominously the squad was weakened by the
absence of several regulars due to first team calls and injuries.
Worse of all was that there was no recognised Keeper, a position
reluctantly filled by Russ Curd - further weakening the outfield.
Against the odds, Buxted took control in the first half with an old
fashioned line-up that seemed to bemuse the home team. Ben
Thomas and Matt Scott were "Wing Halves" and JJ and Andy King
"Inside forwards" - unfamiliar terms for the under 50's!
The JJ/King passing game was probably the best
this season and Thomas and Scott were resolute in their defensive
roles. As a draw was not good enough late in the half Tinker
was pushed forward with immediate results, following good play from
Dean Morris and Andy King enabling Tinker to put away an emphatic
strike. Just before half time a mix up between Simon Barton
and Russ Curd presented Lingfield with an easy score. That was
the turning point, Buxted had to push forward but with Injuries,
sickness and Tiredness put paid to and chance they had as Lingfield
rattled in another four. Noodles scored a fine individual
goal, evading three tackles and driving home from distance to raise
hopes briefly.
Matt Scott was made Man of the Match with a
most encouraging first appearance and Lingfield were a most
hospitable and welcoming club.
