A vigorously contested game ended with Buxted
trooping off the Fairwarp pitch 2-4 losers, unable to compensate for
defensive lapses in the first ten minutes. Only two players lined
up for this game in the same positions as they did the previous
Saturday, due to the unavoidable absence of four key players, and
this proved to be too much of a handicap against a side in the top
half of the division. An early lead might have been decisive
against opponents whose league record says that they can be beaten.
As it was, Fairwarp went ahead against the run of play only for Matt
Harding to equalise from a long Clive Whyte clearance, a feature
that worried Fairwarp’s defence throughout the game. This sequence
of events was repeated, this time Johnny Barton scoring following
excellent approach work through midfield.
Fairwarp went ahead again just before half time
and scored their fourth after picking up a goal kick from Clive who
otherwise had a first class game with a couple of outstanding
stops. Late efforts by non-stop Ricky Parish and Russell ‘leaping
salmon’ Kurd just failed to beat the Fairwarp keeper. Despite the
defeat, Buxted continue to progress with a good passing game and to
give 100% commitment up to the final whistle, surely they will climb
out of the basement before too long.
In midfield, new signing Jonathan Moody had an
impressive first start and just about everyone run their socks off.
A thank you to Tim Burchett, innocent spectator, who was pressed
into refereeing (and did a cracking job) and a special mention to
Karl Harrison for almost launching the first all British satellite
from a free kick.
